A New Product Has to Retire an Old One

Addition is how routines become noise. Replacement is how you learn.

A new bottle is easy to justify as extra. Extra is how you lose the plot. Two acids, two vitamin C serums, and a retinoid are not a thorough routine. They are three ways to annoy the same barrier, and when it flakes you will not know which one did it. The rule is blunt. A new product names the old product it replaces. If it cannot, it waits.

Replacement keeps the job count stable. The new cream takes the place of the old cream, not the place beside it. The new toner takes the nights the old toner had. You run that swap for a few weeks with nothing else changed. Then you know. If the skin is calmer or clearer, the retirement was correct. If it is angrier, you go back, and you have only one suspect.

Launches and lists are designed to make retirement feel stingy. It is the opposite. Finishing fewer bottles is how a method stays legible. The shelf can look sparse. The face prefers sparse.
