How to Choose a Night Cream
An overnight cream is occlusion and lipids. Rich is not the same as correct.
Velora Beauty
Night is when you stop interfering, which is why a cream can do more at night than a serum you apply and immediately cover with makeup. A good overnight cream slows water loss and gives the barrier lipids. “Rich” and “velvety” describe feel. They do not describe whether your skin needed that weight. Dry, tight skin often does. Oily, congested skin may need a lighter lotion and will not be improved by sleeping under a balm that was flattering in a jar.
Apply it last, on skin that is already slightly damp, so you are sealing water and not only oil. If you use a treatment serum, it goes underneath, and it should be one serum. A retinoid and an acid and a heavy cream is not a night ritual. It is a bet. If you wake up with small bumps along the jaw, the richness was too much, or the active under it was. Change one variable.
You do not need a separate “sleeping mask” if your cream already does the job. One product, used every night, will beat a velvety one you save for Sundays. The morning test is simple: comfortable, not greasy, not tight. Anything else is a texture you are tolerating, not a result.
